A member of Winslow's pitching staff turned in a solid performance on mound and the Bulldogs' defense played fundamentally sound. Those were the keys as Winslow posted a 4-2 victory over the Window Rock Fighting Scouts on Saturday at Vargas Park in Winslow.
Longtime Winslow head coach Art Griffith said it was a good win.
"We have been playing well lately," Griffith said. "Pitching and defense were the keys to our win."
Winslow improved its overall record to 14-9. The Bulldogs entertain the Blue Ridge Yellowjackets on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. in a 3A East Region ball game.
Window Rock dropped to 10-13 overall. The Fighting Scouts will play in the 3A North Regional Tournament on Thursday in Tuba City. The semifinals is scheduled for Saturday morning. The championship game is set for Saturday afternoon.
The 3A Play-In Games are scheduled for April 30. The winners advance to the 3A State Tournament on May 3.
Winslow pitcher Dylan Vargas stymied Window Rock's bats. Vargas went the distance on the mound, hurling seven innings. Vargas allowed six hits, two runs, struckout nine batters and issued five base-on-balls.
Vargas did not allow a run for five innings. Winslow's bats came alive in the bottom half of the fourth frame.
The Bulldogs scored one run in the fourth inning. Winslow added three runs in the fifth inning. Window Rock crossed the plate twice in the sixth inning, before Vargas shut the door on the Fighting Scouts in the seventh inning.
Winslow had six hits. Bulldogs' Brennan Sawyer scored one run and had one hit. A.J. Huerta tallied two runs and recorded one base hit. Sonny Wilbanks, Jacob Guerrreo, Solomon Setalla and Aiden Ortez all had one hit apiece for Winslow.
